NH Town Won’t Vote On Gay Marriage Proposal
DEERFIELD, N.H. (AP) ― Deerfield residents won’t be voting next month on a nonbinding measure asking state lawmakers to let voters decide whether to change New Hampshire’s constitution to define marriage as a union of a man and a woman.
The Concord Monitor says residents at a deliberative session Saturday planning Deerfield’s March Town Meeting ballot, voted 92-28 against the article that had been proposed by a church pastor.
Resident Jim Deely says the proposal is “clearly, a statewide, divisive end-around to try to impose individuals religious and moral views on others.”
On Jan. 1, New Hampshire became the fifth state to allow gay marriage.
Since then, opponents have begun a grass-roots effort to challenge the law by raising the issue at Town Meetings this spring.
